What’s in the vial

Four things that decide whether a diluent is worth using.

Bacteriostatic water is a simple formulation. That is exactly why the details matter — the preservative concentration, the container, the seal, and how it behaves in transit.

Preservative system 01 / 04

0.9%

Benzyl alcohol, w/v

The bacteriostatic agent that separates this from plain sterile water. At 0.9% it suppresses microbial growth in the vial between withdrawals, which is what makes repeat access from a single container possible at all.

Multi-dose window 02 / 04

28 days

From first puncture

The stopper reseals after each withdrawal, so one vial serves repeated draws for 28 days. Mark the date on the label at first entry and discard any remaining contents at day 28, regardless of how much is left.

Container closure 03 / 04

Tamper-evident seal

A 20 mm aluminium crimp with a flip-off button over a chlorobutyl stopper. The button cannot be replaced once lifted, so an opened vial is visibly opened. Reject any vial that arrives with a lifted or loose cap.

Temperature tolerance 04 / 04

15–30 °C excursions

Stored at controlled room temperature, 20–25 °C, with brief excursions between 15 °C and 30 °C permitted. A warm mailbox in July will not compromise an unopened, correctly sealed vial. Do not freeze.

Release testing

Every lot, on paper

Lots are released against sterility and bacterial endotoxin testing per USP <71> and <85>, with appearance and pH verified at fill.

Handling sequence

Four steps from delivery to disposal.

Order matters here, so it’s written as a sequence. Follow it and a vial performs to its full 28-day window every time.

  1. 01

    Inspect on arrival

Confirm the flip-off button is intact and the solution is clear and free of particulates. Check the lot number and expiry against your packing slip.

  2. 02

    Store sealed at room temperature

Unopened vials live at 20–25 °C, upright, away from direct sunlight. No refrigeration required before first use.

  3. 03

    Swab, puncture, date the label

Disinfect the stopper with 70% isopropyl alcohol before every entry. Write the puncture date on the label immediately — that date, not the printed expiry, now governs the vial.

  4. 04

Refrigerate, then discard at day 28

Many labs hold punctured vials at 2–8 °C for the remainder of the window. Discard the vial 28 days after first entry, or sooner if the solution turns cloudy or shows particulates.

Common questions

Answers, without the hedging.

Still unresolved? Write to support@simplybac.com and a person answers within one business day.

Unopened: store at controlled room temperature, 20–25 °C, with brief excursions from 15–30 °C permitted. Keep vials upright in their carton, out of direct sunlight. Refrigeration is unnecessary before first use and offers no benefit to a sealed vial.

After puncture: the 0.9% benzyl alcohol keeps the contents bacteriostatic through the 28-day window at room temperature, but common laboratory practice is to hold punctured vials refrigerated at 2–8 °C between uses as an added margin. Either way, swab the stopper with 70% isopropyl alcohol before every entry and record the puncture date on the label.

Do not freeze at any stage.

Sealed vials carry a 24-month shelf life from the date of fill, printed as a lot expiry on every label. We ship from current stock, so vials typically arrive with 18 months or more remaining. That printed expiry applies only while the vial is unopened and correctly stored.

Once punctured, the beyond-use date takes over: 28 days from first entry, and it always wins. A vial opened on the 1st is discarded on the 29th even if the label reads two years out. Write the puncture date on the vial the moment you enter it — the label is the record.

Discard immediately, regardless of dates, if the solution is cloudy, discoloured, contains visible particulates, or if the container integrity is compromised.

Orders placed before 2:00 PM ET on a business day leave the facility the same day. Standard domestic delivery runs 2–5 business days; expedited two-day and overnight options appear at checkout. Tracking is emailed the moment the label is generated.

Packaging is deliberately plain. Vials travel in a moulded insert inside an unmarked corrugated box — no branding, no product imagery, and no indication of contents on the exterior. The return address reads as a neutral fulfilment name, and your card statement shows a generic descriptor.

Every shipment is packed to survive normal transit temperatures. If a vial arrives cracked, leaking, or with a compromised seal, photograph it and contact us within 72 hours for a free replacement.

Sterile water contains no preservative, so it is a single-use product — once the seal is broken there is nothing suppressing microbial growth, and the remainder is discarded.

Bacteriostatic water is the same purified water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added. The preservative inhibits bacterial growth in the container between withdrawals, which is what permits repeated entry into one vial across 28 days. If your protocol calls for multiple withdrawals from a single container, this is the format that supports it.

Yes, at no charge. Email the lot number from your vial label to coa@simplybac.com and we return the release documentation for that lot, usually the same business day.

Institutional buyers who need documentation attached to every shipment can request it as a standing instruction on the account.

Unopened vials in intact original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a full refund less return postage. Start a return from your order confirmation email.

Opened vials and vials with a lifted flip-off button cannot be returned or restocked, for reasons of container integrity. Damage in transit is a separate matter and is always replaced free — see the shipping answer above.
